Former Board Chair Writes Book About TASK
In Plain Sight: The Story of TASK
By LEE SEGLEM, Member of TASK Board of Trustees
"When
I started volunteering at the soup kitchen eight years ago,
my little world there was all about chopping onions, stocking
shelves, serving food – basically showing up a
couple of hours a week, then heading home, good deed done.
I never imagined it would take over my life, never saw it
coming. But that’s the way it is with TASK. The place
has a very peculiar but determined way of getting inside your
head, and in my case – I’m a writer – that could only mean
one thing over time: a book. The result is IN PLAIN SIGHT – The
Story of TASK, published by iUniverse, Inc.
"What I’ve tried to do is put a human face on one
corner of a vast and thriving 21st century enterprise
called hunger that many people don’t
think about but should. I tell the story of the people who struggle
with it every day – the patrons, the workers, the volunteers – on
the streets of the capital city of one of the wealthiest
states in the nation. TASK, of course, is more than just
a soup kitchen; it is also an outpost of education and enrichment
smack in the middle of a tenuous battle against the underlying
causes of poverty, and I wanted to tell that story, too.
"There’s a lot of me in IN PLAIN SIGHT as well, and
I’m afraid that
couldn’t be helped because, as I write in the book, 'Trenton
is where I learned about hunger, where it became personal for
me, where it shed a thick hide of abstraction and touched my
life, if only from the outside looking in. It is also where I
learned something else: that the kindness of strangers can make
a difference, even against a scourge that lingers in plain sight
and never goes away. More than anything, this is really just
a simple story about everyday people, people who need help and
people who are fighting a holding action to meet that need. Fortunately,
and unfortunately, that fight goes on.'”
