30 ways to help TASK

James Crockman, TASK patron, was featured in The New York Times news story on May 18th, 2012 entitled, “A Human Antenna of Breaking News”.

While growing up, James Crockman was always into listening to the police scanner.  He started with Trenton blotters, then as he got older and continued his hobby, he began listening to scanners from other municipalities.

As an adult, in his free time, he would listen to scanners and call in tips to the local news network.  When they first offered him a job, he declined because he didn’t know how to type.  “I was worried I wouldn’t be able to communicate,” James admits.

James started coming to TASK for meals when he lost his job and his apartment.  At that time, he was sleeping in his car.  Here, he met Diane Subber, TASK Information Technology Program Specialist and Computer Teacher.  Diane helped him find typing programs and improve his computer skills.  James learned how to type and was able to accept the job at the news network.

Six years later, he is still working full-time doing a job he loves.  “I feel like I’m at the heart of it,” James says proudly. “I’m the nerve of the news in the area.”

The New York Times found out about James’ extraordinary talent and decided to feature him in the “Character Study” section printed on May 18th, 2012.  Click here to read the article written about James and to watch the New York Times online video.

James still stops in to visit TASK and let Diane know how he’s doing.  We at TASK are proud to say that we know him.
