About the Organization:

The Trenton Area Soup Kitchen is a charitable non-profit organization whose mission it is to respond to the needs of people in Trenton by:

  • Providing meals to all those who are hungry.
  • Providing services to encourage self-sufficiency and improve quality of life.
  • Informing the wider community of the needs of the hungry.
  • Advocating for resources to meet those needs.

Position Description:

The AmeriCorps member is responsible for assisting the Adult Education Coordinator and IT Program Specialist in carrying out the daily tasks at the soup kitchen.

Position Requirements:

This position requires excellent relationship skills in interacting with soup kitchen patrons, volunteers, and agency staff as well as the ability to work with computers. Skills required include: communication, management/leadership, organizational and computer skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Tutoring literacy and GED preparation students.
  • Assisting with coordination of specific events as requested (annual student award ceremony, educational field trips, etc.).
  • Tutoring computer students.
  • Facilitating computer lab in absence of IT Program Specialist.
  • Assisting students and patrons with resume preparation.
  • Assisting students and patrons in obtaining and using e-mail addresses.
  • Assisting patrons completing on-line job applications and resume building.
  • Enrolling students in computer GED practice programs and giving overview.
  • Enrolling students and patrons in computer typing program and giving overview.
  • Connecting with One-Stop Career Center.
  • Making presentations to local schools, organizations and businesses.


Living Stipend - $8,000

Education Award - $2,775 (AmeriCorps, upon successful completion of service)

Childcare if eligible

Hours - 900 hours annually, flexible schedule (about 18 hours/week).
